Nitrogen enrichment delays the emergence of an aridity-induced threshold for plant biomass

چکیده
Abstract Crossing certain aridity thresholds in global drylands can lead to abrupt decays of ecosystem attributes such as plant productivity, potentially causing land degradation and desertification. It is largely unknown, however, whether these be altered by other key change drivers known affect the water-use efficiency productivity vegetation, elevated CO2 nitrogen (N) enrichment. Using > 5000 empirical measurements biomass, we show that crossing an (1–precipitation/potential evapotranspiration) threshold ∼0.50, which marks transition from dry sub-humid semi-arid climates, leads declines aboveground biomass (AGB) progressive increases root: shoot ratios, thus importantly affecting carbon stocks their distribution. N enrichment significantly increased AGB delayed emergence its 0.49 0.55 (P < 0.05). By coupling remote sensing estimates leaf area index with simulations multiple models, found did not alter observed threshold. 2100, under RCP 8.5 scenario, forecast a 0.3% net increase exceeding detected scenario includes enrichment, comparison 2.9% if effect considered. Our study indicates could mitigate great extent negative impact increasing on drylands. These findings are critical for improving forecasts vegetation changes response ongoing environmental change.

Nitrogen enrichment and plant communities.
Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) enrichment of many ecosystems throughout the globe has important ramifications for plant communities. Observational and experimental studies frequently find species richness declines with N enrichment, in concert with increasing primary production. Nitrogen enrichment also reorders species composition, including species turnover through gains and losses of species, ch...

Beyond biomass: measuring the effects of community-level nitrogen enrichment on floral traits, pollinator visitation and plant reproduction
1. Nitrogen (N) limits primary productivity in many systems and can have dramatic effects on plant–herbivore interactions, but its effects on mutualistic interactions at the community level are not well-understood. The reproduction of many plants depends on both soil N and pollination, and N may affect floral traits, such as flower number or size, which are important for pollinator attraction t...

Aridity threshold in controlling ecosystem nitrogen cycling in arid and semi-arid grasslands.
Higher aridity and more extreme rainfall events in drylands are predicted due to climate change. Yet, it is unclear how changing precipitation regimes may affect nitrogen (N) cycling, especially in areas with extremely high aridity. Here we investigate soil N isotopic values (δ(15)N) along a 3,200 km aridity gradient and reveal a hump-shaped relationship between soil δ(15)N and aridity index (A...
